Book review: AFTER THINGS FELL APART by Ron Goulart

Book review:
AFTER THINGS FELL APART (1970) by Ron Goulart

This a satirical depiction of a near-future USA fractured into countless subcultures, each fanatically devoted to its own "roleplayed" lifestyle.

Though the book is a bit too sketchy, and parts of it haven't aged well (computers are clunky and useless; there's no Internet; nobody uses cellphones), it is sometimes quite funny (look for the sly guest appearance of Harlan Ellison). Also, its satire of "identity politics" might be more timely now than when it was written.

Not a book I would recommend, but Goulart's sense of humor has a certain appeal.

Book review: THE CYBERIAD by Stanislaw Lem

Book review:
THE CYBERIAD by Stanislaw Lem (1965).

Lem is known mostly for his novel SOLARIS, which is a very serious work... but THE CYBERIAD is a hilarious comical sci-fi fantasy.

Set in a fairytale future populated only by very human robots, the book follows the adventures and misadventures of the two robots Trurl and Klapaucius, who constantly bicker with each other.

Several of the stories in the book are satirical. (Living under a Communist dictatorship, the author could poke fun at the system under the guise of SF.) The wonderful illustrations by Daniel Mroz add greatly to the reading pleasure. Highly recommended.
