Book review: THE THIRD POLICEMAN by Flann O'Brien

THE THIRD POLICEMAN (1967) by Flann O'Brien (a.k.a. Brian O'Nolan)

This novel was written around 1940, but was published after the author's death.

It received great attention much later, when the TV series LOST used it as a reference.

THE THIRD POLICEMAN is a comical nightmare about a journey into a surreal, but unmistakably Irish, landscape. What happens there reminds me of Monty Python sketches.

There is a BBC radio adaptation... but it omits the many hilarious footnotes that are scattered throughout the original book. These footnotes refer to a fictional author and crank philosopher, whose works play a part in the plot of THE THIRD POLICEMAN.

Recommended for fans of absurdist humor.
